Is shedding a side effect of prednisone in dogs

Prednisone itself does not cause shedding or hair losss but the condition your animal has that causes him to take prednisone may be the reason he is losing hair.check with your vet.

I've asked my vet about shedding because our dog sheds a lot and they said it was because of human food. Which is true, because we do feed our dog a lot of scraps from the table. Good luck!

Hi! I really do not think it is the prednisone at all. If she had been on it for long term when I'd say only maybe. What ur probably seeing is ur pup shedding it is puppy coat to have its adolescent coat come in. Most pups at this age do shed their puppy coats if not sooner. Also it is getting into spring & summer so that will also cause any dog to shed.

I do not think u anything to worry about just keep brushing ur pup to get rid of all the loose fur.

A general search did not come up with anything obvious on a connection between prednisone & shedding.

Obviously ur dog is on prednisone for a reason, & whatever that condition is may be causing physical or psychological stress for the dog, which could be causing the shedding. Also, if spring has sprung where u r like it has here with substantially warmer temps, that could be causing shedding to be much more noticable.

If u r really concerned, I would call ur vet tomorrow as they r familiar with ur dogs condition & background.

I had a dog who needed to be on prednisone for almost a year. Shedding was very definitely not a side affect - a large weight gain was. If your puppy is shedding, it is because it is spring - one of the 2 times of year dogs shed.
