How bad is it to take prednisone for 5 days, 40mg daily, for slight bronchial inflammation and a bad cough

It is safe to take the prednisone.usually with prednisone i believe you start out by taking 3 the first day 2 on the second day 1 there after. not safe to take for prolonged periods.the prednisone is for inflammation. give it time and you will notice the difference. if you smoke stop.

It is o.k. to take has long has it is only for a short time.My son is a severe asthmatic & his doctor gives it to him.But only rarely & only for 3 days at a time.The prednisone has a lot of nasty side effects.Like causing ur immune system to be compromised for up to a year after stopping treatment.It can mess with u thyroid counts & cause blood test to come back with false positives.Like ur T2 & T3 counts can appear to be bad or u can appear to have the onset of diabetes.When it is really the meds messing with ur body.You should talk to ur doctor or pharmacist.They should be able to give u all the info u need on this med.

it will be very helpful . the drug reduces inflammation. and is said to mask the symptoms of illness. a person can be near death be on that drug and feel fine. when its time to come off you have to be watchful that you do not get to feeling sick again . if you do just go to the doctor again asap.
most often that drug is tapered off slowly . you are on a very short coarse low dose.

This is very reasonable course of treatment and it is quite safe. It is safe to stop abruptly after taking it only 5 days.

I have very bad asmatha & when i get bad attacks, which is quite often, my chest feels like someone ties an elastic band around me under my lungs to make them blow up right big & then stabs me over & over. i know its kindda graphic but thats the only way i can explain it, the doctors always put me on pred. there the only think that works, well with other meds too, 5 days is not that long to be on them. & if ur airways is clogged up they work wonders, yes a antibiotic may help but not so fast or as good as these pills. ur doctor knows what he is doing. they r worth taking. just eat a light snack when taking them liek a slice of bread or a cracker otherwise they may make u stomach sick.

A burst of prednisone like that is common treatment for inflammation of the lungs from infection/allergies and asthma. It will work faster than an antibiotic to help you respiratory status and allow the lungs to clear to keep you breathing. Getting rid of the inflammation will also help you to get rid of an infection if you have one. A short dose like that should not hurt you or your doctor would not have prescribed it.

Five days on predinzone should help knock it down. Antibiotics are too over prescribed and they are loosing their effectiveness. It is good that the predinzone is only for five days as it is a steroid and can be addictive. The prescription should be just find for knocking down the inflammation.

I am not a physician, but I have taken that ''wonder drug'' & I am a little confused.

Putting u on 40 mg. is not unusual to help with inflammation in tissues like the lungs. What is unusual is to just stop taking it abruptly. Prednisone is a drug that usually requires u to decrease ur dosage before u get off of it. In other words, u would take 40 mg/day for 5 days, 20mg/day for 2 days, 10mg/day for 2 days, 5 m/day for 2 days & then get off of it completely. It can be traumatic for the body to just stop taking it cold turkey.

He obviously thinks u need to take it, & if u have something viral, the antibiotic wo not help. Some times pleurisy is treated with prednisone. Again, talk to the pharmacist to see if a complete withdrawal after 5 days on 40mg/day will hurt you. If it won't, then take the drug. The bad side effects happen with long term use, not a five day plan. You may experience more hunger pains than usual, & be a little irritable around the fifth day, but all of these will go away when u stop taking the drug. Good luck.

prednisone is good for breathing problems it will help make your lungs stonger.. they give it to me now and then.. but i have copd. that many days wont hurt you at all. its when your on it for long periods of time.. it would make you swell some but just that many days you wont notice anything. good luck and get well.

Its okay to take Pred. for that short amount of time, at that dosage.

When u take Pred. for a long extended period of time, then that is when u have to taper off slowly.

And yes..it is definitely worth taking it..it will open up ur bronchial tubes..they're inflamed, not infected...thats why ur doc put u on the Pred. & not antibiotics..
