hi long, I am a female crohn is pt. Is ur bf a candidate for Entocort (a steroid but NO serious side effects that r absorbed into the blood stream like prednisone) by chance? reason i ask is that most GI r leaning toward the newer treatments: Remicade, Humira, 6MP, or Imuran. Surgery is always a last option when medicinal treatment has failed & the pt. is quality of life is next to none.
if u go to the crohn is & colitis foundation website, u will find information on diet, exercise, surgery, treatments, locate a local support group near u so u can educate yourself about IBD (crohns or ulcerative colitis). Also, they have a live chat & an 800 number u can call M-F 9 am - 5 pm. Both r run by healthcare professionals well versed in Crohns. At their educational meetings some of the speakers r MDs, drug reps, dieticians, etc. w/Q&A sessions at the end of each lecture. I have learned ALOT by attending these meetings. For ex- do NOT drink or smoke b/c it can interfere w/treatment, use the BRAT diet (Bananas,Rice, Applesauce, Toast) when flaring & can not eat much, drink plenty of water, for pain use a heating pad on ur gut 15 min. on 15 off or a Thermacare heat wrap for ur back..position the discs over the sore spot & he can sleep w/it for 8 hrs.
As for diet, see if u can set up an appt. at a local hospital with a dietician. His MD might be able to give him a recommendation as well. Dieticians deal with all sorts of illness related diets each day. I've provided a link for the american dieticians association for you. You can even locate an RD in ur own town if he does not wish to drive to the hospital.
I hope this helps u both out. best of luck. :)
